Boomer tries to reject job candidate because she's a fan of Star Trek: 'My coworker found this to be a red flag'

There are several no-nos when it comes to what you should not reveal in a job interview, but discussing your enjoyment of Star Trek should not be on the list. Now, I myself am not a Trekkie, and while taking off from work to attend Star Trek-themed events would not be the way I elect to use my PTO, I certainly would not disparage someone else for wanting to use their much-deserved time off in this way.

This job candidate was interviewing to be a last-minute replacement while this Redditor was on medical leave. Her one request during the interview process was to put in an early vacation date for a comic con event to meet a famous Star Trek performer. Apparently, according to the boomer that was interviewing her, this was a major red flag for her to reveal as it made her seem "weird" and like someone who over-shares. 

Who hasn't seen or heard way worse about the personal details of our coworkers? Star Trek fandom is likely far more harmless than whatever this dude does in his free time.     I thought she came across really nice, she spoke in an intelligent manner and had most of the skills the job requires. Towards the end of the interview she said she could be available immediately but asked if she could have this specific day off because she had a trip planned (hotel + flight booked and paid for).

    Her "mistake" was going into detail about this trip. Basically she's a big fan of Star Tek and she's going to a comic con to see an actor she really likes.

    My boomer coworkers would probably die if they knew I sat at my desk listening to European Power Metal about space wizards fighting undead unicorns or the fact that I spend what little free time I have playing video games with my friends. Literally has 0 effect on my job. performance other than the fact that I tend to be a better problem solver.

I once got an interview (networking role) and at that point i only my star trek related mail due to ISP switch. Department manager saw that, pointed it out to HR and remarked "we should hire him, he fits the culture"

    Renbarre 20h ago • This real boomer went to plenty of cons, did live role playing, still has her costumes, and is listening to Mongolian hard metal. She is scaring the pants of her younger colleagues who think that as a boomer she is supposed to be an old clucking hen complaining about the young ones and their strange tastes. In fact you'll be surprised to learn that boomers started role playing, whether with dice or live.
